THE ETERNAL QUESTION

Can pitching overcome hitting? Lets hear from you . The answer,by the way, is no.Good hitters can beat pitching over a long period. The greatest teams scored alot of runs.Once in a while a Koufax comes around and carries their team to victory. Offence, however, wins the day. Can Pujols,Gonzalez,Braun,Rodriguez,Howard be shut down in the long term? NO. Can Lee,Lester,Halladay,C.C.,Romero be beaten? YES.

My my how quick we forget. Maybe my mind is foggy and I'm getting confused by the dog days of summer but didn't the San Francisco Giants and their anemic hitting but super pitching beat the Texas Rangers - the so called Big Bashin' Cowboys of the AL?

Even prior World Series champions such as the Phillies and Red Sox who had all-star hitting lineups, also won it largely on the play of their pitching.

In case you want to say the SFG were an anomaly, what would be your argument for the 2005 Chicago White Sox? They also won it mostly through their pitching.

Arizona's 2001 championship where Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling almost single-handedly won it for them over the Yankees is another example where hitting alone cannot beat pitching.

Shucks, the miracle of 2004 is depicted by Curt Schilling's bloody sock - not for Big Papi's clutch hitting that postseason.

And the list goes on and on. Hitting RARELY beats pitching come playoff time. Sure, great hitting is remembered as you said "the greatest teams" score alot of runs and are great hitting teams - people love offense. But being great clearly has no correlation with winning the Big Prize!

I think you are confused. I am talking about seasons, not playoff serieses.Even using your arguments, they are pure opinion:"largely on their pitching"why?,because you say so.There were many high scoring games. A depiction of blood proves nothing.Go back to your history.Being great has everything to do with the Big Prize.Scoring runs is the name of the game, any time of the season.
